Sign Dedication Church on the Hill Cemetery

Event Date:
Saturday, September 30, 2023 - 11:00pm

On Saturday, Sept 30 at 11:00 a.m., there will be a dedication of a new sign posted at Church on the Hill Cemetery in Lenox, with a map that informs the public where over 50 markers of historical interest are located. The full color map was created by Lenox artist Bart Arnold, with sign design by Kate Hixon.

The sign was the brainchild of the Lenox Historical Commission [LHC], which crafted the list of names, dates, and biographical tidbits. A sample from the list includes:

•           Jeremiah Bradley, a member of the Mass 54th

•           Lenges H. Bull, owner of Bull Chevrolet

•           Jonathan Hinsdale, the first recorded European settler in Lenox

•           Dr. Anson Jones, last president of the Republic of Texas

•           Ellen Sturgis Tappan Dixey, artist who lived with her family at Tanglewood

Speaking of Tanglewood, next year is the 150th anniversary of Serge Koussevitzky’s birth, making the map invaluable for pilgrims (the music kind).

The map is also helpful for what it doesn’t show as much as for what it does show. For instance, it marks 4 members of the Mass 54th regiment, but not the 3 members of the Mass 5th cavalry buried near their comrades of color. As visitors are invited to explore, there will be more to discover.
