Where and what is my water shut-off?

Almost all homes and properties have a water-shut off outside the building.  This can be in the form of a large gate valve (if it is for a big building) or a curb-stop (for a home).

See the pictures below for a common gate box valve lid and curb-stop lid. Inside these are your water shut-offs

The Water Department has records of the location of most of these valves and curb-stops.  Sometimes they are buried under the grass or dirt.  We would be happy to look up in the records at the DPW office for the location of your water shut-off and make of copy of the record for you to keep at your property, or come to your property and locate your shut-off for you.  If you need to make plumbing repairs at your property and need the water completely shut-off to your property, your plumber can call the Water Department and schedule a shut-off of your valve so repairs can be made.  There is a fee for this service.  See the Water and Sewer Fee Schedule on the sidebar as fees vary based on the size of the valve.
