Lenox is a small residential community nestled in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts. Home to roughly 6,000 year round residents, the Town hosts thousands more particularly during the summer months when the many cultural venues are in full operation. Lenox is a central player in making the Berkshires “America’s Premier Cultural Resort” being home to Tanglewood, the BSO’s summer facility; Edith Wharton’s The Mount; and Shakespeare and Company’s new international performance and training campus.
The town comprises 21 square miles of land from the base of October Mountain State Forest, across the flood plain of the Housatonic River, to the sky line of Yokun Ridge. Adjacent to the historic village lies Kennedy Park, a 500 + acre Town preserve with miles of hiking trails and scenic overlooks. The park abuts the 1300+ acre Pleasant Valley Sanctuary owned and operated by the Mass Audubon Society. Another 800 acres of the Town’s watershed lands means that the majority of the Town’s western flank, along with the State Forest on the eastern flank will remain as open space forever. The Town Beach at Laurel Lake is one of the many small parks maintained by our Parks and Recreation Department.
While the many fine resorts, restaurants, shops, and inns are the most visible aspects of our local, tourist oriented economy, there exists an array of small businesses from computer software firms to marketing specialists, from energy consulting, to land use planning, and from paper machinery manufacturing to metal fabrication. Lenox is located just south of the City of Pittsfield where many from Lenox work. The Town is a few minutes north of Lee and the Mass Turnpike.
Three important hubs of commercial and residential life lie within Lenox’s border. The historical village district is the largest of these in the center of Town. North Lenox has a concentration of larger retail operations. Lenox Dale is a predominantly residential neighborhood with a small mix of commercial establishments. Small clusters of residential neighborhoods and significant open space fill in the area between these three hubs.
Lenox citizens gather for our Annual Town Meeting in May to approve our local municipal and school budgets and to elect our 5 member Board of Selectmen. The Selectmen work closely with our Town Manager in overseeing municipal operations. An elected School Committee hires our own School Superintendent who, together, run our excellent preK-12 school system.
Maintaining our small town character while hosting internationally acclaimed cultural venues keeps those of us involved in municipal operations busy.
